Susan G. Simon

Susie Gaynell Simon, beloved by her family and community, passed away peacefully after a brief battle with cancer on Sunday, November 13, 2022, in Dallas, Texas, surrounded by her family. Susie was born on March 16, 1943, to Floyd and Marjorie Marshall and grew up in Colombia, Missouri. She graduated from Hickman High in 1961 and obtained a degree in elementary education from the University of Missouri in 1965.

In middle school, Susie met her lifelong sweetheart and loving husband of 43 years, the late J. Stephen “Steve” Simon, a former Director and Senior Vice President of ExxonMobil Corporation. After graduating from college, they married. While Steve pursued graduate studies, Susie taught elementary children in inner-city public schools in the Chicago area. After two years as an Army spouse, Susie joined Steve on a whirlwind career with ExxonMobil which took them all over the U.S. and abroad, including time in Baton Rouge, Houston, New Jersey, New York, London, Rome, Miami, the Caribbean, Central America, Virginia and finally the Dallas area.

Following Steve’s unexpected passing in 2009, Susie dedicated her life to serving others with the same resolve and love she provided her own family for so many years. Susie was actively involved in and supported several community organizations in Dallas, including the Vickery Meadow Learning Center (VMLC) where children and adult immigrants learn English and literacy skills, the Stewpot Alliance and the Nexus Recovery Center, where she funded construction of a new kitchen. A gracious hostess, Susie loved opening her home in Highland Park every Christmas for a weekend-long holiday fair for dozens of community organizations. Susie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, an avid college football and basketball fan and most of all, a kind, considerate woman that was dearly loved by her family and all those that knew her. She lit up the world with her quick wit, smile, laughter and lively spirit.

She is survived by her daughters Marnie and her husband Nicolás Medina, of Houston; Angela and her husband Steve Reynolds of Nashville, Tennessee; Candice and her husband Rick Murillo of Frisco; grandchildren Alexandra Medina, Nicolás Jr. Medina, Isabel Murillo, Nathan Murillo, Reagan Reynolds, Riley Reynolds, Eva Luna Medina and Juan Pablo Medina. Also surviving are her brother Larry Marshall from Palm Harbor, Florida; sister Michelle Marshall from Alexandria, Virginia; and a large and loving extended family.

The family will receive friends for visitation on Monday, November 21, at 6:00 p.m. at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home, 7405 W Northwest Hwy., with Rosary at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, November 22 ,at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 8017 Preston Road, with interment at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
