Steven Wayne Smith, 77, of Dallas, Texas, died on October 17, 2024. He was a son, brother, “Unc” and friend. Steve was born August 11, 1947, to Merl and Vivian Smith in Dallas and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1965. In October 1966, Steve enlisted and served in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Texas, California, Vietnam, and North Dakota. He was quickly promoted to sergeant, served as a police air security officer, and received several medals of honor. Steve was honorably discharged in October 1972. He then worked for Braniff Airlines until 1982 and finished his career at American Airlines until retirement.
Steve was a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church. In January 2020, with his church group, he went on the trip of a lifetime, visiting Jordan, Egypt, and Israel, including Jerusalem, the land where Jesus walked! He enjoyed attending church weekly, exercising at the YMCA, and spending time with friends and family.
Steve was preceded in death by his beloved dog Charlie, his parents, Merl and Vivian Smith, and his nephew Dennis Scherr.
Steve is survived by his sister, Cheryl Scherr, and her husband Frederick; his niece Christy Kemendo, and her husband Johnny; his nephew Doug Scherr, and his wife Shannon; Dennis’s wife Catherine Scherr; and his nephew Dustin Scherr and his wife Erin. He is also survived by his grandnieces and grandnephews: Courtney Kemendo, Morgan and Jake Oliver, Jack Kemendo, Hayden Scherr, Paige Scherr, Sam Scherr, Gracie Scherr, Charles Scherr, and Grace Scherr, as well as his great-grandniece and great-grandnephew, Graham and Charlotte Oliver.
Steven Wayne Smith will be laid to rest at the Dallas-Ft. Worth National Cemetery on November 7, 2024.
