Shelah Jewette Patton McLaughlin passed away Saturday morning, September 24, 2011 at the age of 91. She most recently resided with her many friends at Sterling House, located at 5800 North Park Dr. in Watauga, Texas.
Jewette was born at home in Paint Rock, Texas on January 30, 1920. She accepted Christ on July 23, 1926 and was baptized in the Concho River. She graduated from Paint Rock High School, and from Hardin-Simmons University in 1941. While at Hardin-Simmons she met Dr. Charles P. McLaughlin, and they were married on September 3, 1942. She came to deeply love the world of Baptist missions and causes with Dr. Charlie, who was the Director of State Missions for the Baptist General Convention of Texas for over 25 years. She also deeply loved her friends at First Baptist Church of Dallas, where she attended most of her adult life.
Wherever Jewette went, churches or later in assisted living homes, she made good friends and appreciated each one. She was a woman of her own faith and encouraged her grandchildren to memorize Psalm 100. It was this Psalm that was being read to her as she quietly and peacefully passed away in the presence of her daughter, Sheila Sims; son-in-law, Mike Sims; and son, Charles C. McLaughlin.
She is preceded in death by her parents Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Patton, her husband Charles P., and her oldest son, Manse McLaughlin. She is survived by her daughter Sheilaa and her son Charles C., her beloved sister Mary Jim Currie, her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren, many beloved relatives on both the Currie and McLaughlin sides of the family and many friends.
Officiating at her service at Western Hills Baptist Church is Bill Swank, a longtime friend and son of Fred and Elizabeth Swank, who were life-long friends and traveling companions. Andy Pickens, who was her Minister of Music/Worship when she attended Western Hills Baptist Church, will be leading in worship. Officiating at the graveside service is her nephew Dr. David Currie, the son of her sister Mary Jim.
The family invites you to celebrate the blessings of having Jewette with us in good health for 91 years and the future as promised to all who believe in and follow Jesus Christ.
