Rudy Torrez, age 68, of Dallas, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2024. He was born on April 14, 1956, in Sweetwater, Texas, to Juan and Elvira Torrez. Rudy spent his early years in Sweetwater before moving to Grand Prairie, Texas, during middle school. He graduated from Grand Prairie High School and later earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1980.
Rudy married Lydia Friesenhahn in 1979, and together they had three sons. They shared 45 years of marriage, and in May, they celebrated their anniversary with a memorable trip to the island of Kauai. There, they enjoyed walks, bike rides, the ocean breeze, and quiet moments together—making cherished memories during their final vacation. Throughout their time together Rudy addored Lydia as his partner, confidant, and friend.
Professionally Rudy worked for NCH Corporation as a Manager for 15 years before transitioning to a career in real estate. He founded Torrez Residential Inc., a successful home inspection business he ran for 25 years. Rudy's commitment to honesty, detail, and helping families make one of the most significant decisions in their lives earned him the trust of thousands of clients, many of whom returned to him for future inspections.
In his free time, Rudy developed a love of music as a high school student. He played first trumpet in the marching and jazz bands. That love expanded as he grew older. He could be found sitting alone and listening to everything from Jazz to Tejano, from classical to Rock & Roll. Music brought him great joy, peace, and serenity. He also loved to golf and enjoyed the outdoors, and the camaraderie of his friends. While not a scratch golfer, he treasured the experiences shared on the course. Rudy was also a devoted Texas Rangers fan. He followed every game with passion, and when the Rangers won the World Series, his joy was palpable. A seasoned grill master, Rudy spent many Saturday evenings cooking for his family and friends, perfecting the craft he loved so much.
Rudy’s love for God, family, and friends defined him. He was a spiritual man, deeply rooted in his faith, reading daily reflections, and trusting in God’s mercy and compassion. His love for his three sons—was boundless. Rudy reveled in their presence, always delighted by their voices, questions, and affection.
Rudy also cherished his friends and found a ministry in connecting with others. He was especially grateful for his AA family, whom he loved and admired.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Juan and Elvira Torrez; his sister Rosa Samora and her husband Raul; his brother-in-law Manuel Gomez; and several other beloved family members and siblings including Francisco and Delores Gomez, Gloria Gomez, Velia Gomez, Tony Gomez, Frank Gomez, Juana Gomez, and Delia Sparkman.
Rudy is survived by his wife Lydia Torrez; his sons and their families - Michael (wife, Rebecca), Nicholas (wife, Milcah), and Daniel (wife, Melissa)—and his seven grandchildren, Noah, Emma, Hazel, Eli, Gus, Lily, and Nano. He is also survived by his siblings, Juanita Gomez, Edward Gomez, Lupe Gomez, Jerry Gomez, Maria Castro, and Mario Gomez; and his many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the St. Cecilia School Student Scholarship Fund, honoring Rudy’s belief in Catholic education and his desire to help future generations receive an enriching and transformative education.
May Rudy's legacy of faith, love, and generosity continue to bless those who knew him.
