lawyer, but most of all he was a family man devoted to Jacky, his wife of 60 years and their family. Bob is
survived by his wife, Jacky Castle Spears; his son Jeff Spears and his wife Maria, of Dallas, and their
children, Page and Georgia Spears; his daughter Sally White and her husband Brian, of Wichita, Kansas,
and their children Brooks and Morgan White. He is also survived by his brother Dr. William S. Spears and
his wife, Candye. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, James and Berniece Spears.
Born on August 1, 1943 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Bob moved with his family to Lubbock, Texas
following World War II to establish the Spears Brothers Furniture Company. Bob attended Lubbock
public schools and graduated from Texas Tech University in 1965 where he was a member of the Sigma
Chi Fraternity. After graduating from Texas Tech, Bob moved his family to Austin to attend law school.
He excelled at the University of Texas Law School where he was a member of the Law Review, Order of
the Coif, Chancellors, and graduated with full academic honors.
Following his graduation, Bob joined the prestigious law firm of Rain Harrell Emery Young and
Doke in Dallas, Texas, first as an associate and later as a partner for many years. He specialized in
corporate work for leading banks and corporations on mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, financings, and
other complex contractual and SEC related actions. Bob began his second career as legal counsel to
several corporations concluding with a term as General Counsel for Lone Star Steel Corporation.
Bob was widely admired professionally and among his peers and friends for his quiet demeanor,
his unflagging integrity, his soft-spoken manner, and his respect for all. Though Bob’s priorities were his
wife, children and grandchildren, he was also an esteemed community leader. He volunteered
generously of his time in serving his community, university alumnus, and church. Bob was a prodigious
reader and enjoyed traveling extensively world-wide with his wife, Jacky, their children and friends. Bob
will be missed by many, especially by those who enjoyed his frequent informative emails.
Among Bob’s many service achievements, he was on the Board of Directors of Visiting Nurses
Association, Senior Source, and the Gil Taylor Depression Awareness Alliance. He was a leader at Park
Cities Baptist Church for 52 years, active in the Saul Sunday School Class, and delivered Meals on Wheels.
He was a member of the Dallas Bar Association; the Texas Bar Association; Dallas Country Club; Dallas
Petroleum Club; Turtle Creek Breakfast Club; and the Garden of the Gods Club in Colorado Springs, CO.
A celebration of life for Bob will be held at a later date. DonaYons may be made in his name to
VNA or Park Cities Baptist Church Columbarium Fund.
