Robert "Bob" William Jones

Bob passed away on November 29, 2022 as a result of dementia. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Ralph, his parents, Lodas and Violet Jones, and two doting aunts, Marietta and Grace Compton. Bob is survived by his wife, Frances, two children Richard (Spike) Jones and wife Kathie, and Melissa (Missy) Romero and husband Cesar, plus six grandsons.

Bob was lifetime Dallasite. He grew up in Urbandale and graduated from Samuel High School in 1958. He attended Arlington State College (now UTA) where he graduated in 1963 with a degree in business.

Bob’s childhood was full of adventure and many hobbies. His first love was building model airplanes. Friends and neighbors remember all those planes that hung from his bedroom ceiling! This hobby continued into adulthood where he moved up to building radio-controlled airplanes.

Bob also loved Ham Radio. He got his license at 18 and was issued the call letters of WA5ODG. For over 60 years, he talked to Hams all over the world.

In college, Bob participated in ROTC, and upon graduation, he was commissioned into the Army as a Second Lieutenant.

Bob married his wife Frances in June, 1963, right after his graduation from UTA. They honeymooned all the way to Georgia, where Bob was stationed at Fort Gordon for five months. Their permanent assignment was Pirmasens, Germany, where Bob served for three years. He was a communications officer and was even able to set up a radio station on base. He talked often to Dallas. You can imagine his excitement when he talked all the way to Australia! Bob and Frances were able to travel all over Germany and many other European countries. They also took two American Express tours to the Holy Land and Italy. Frances calls it their three-year honeymoon!

Upon returning to Texas in 1967, Bob took the National Federal Exam and was hired by the IRS, where he worked for the next 40 years, retiring in 2001. When Bob retired, he was awarded the Albert Gallatin award for outstanding service.

Their son Richard (Spike) was born in 1973 and their daughter Melissa (missy) was born in 1976. Bob loved his family and enjoyed all their activities. He was proud of their accomplishments and honors. They loved her dad and appreciated all he did for them.

Bob and Frances were members of Wilshire Baptist Church for 55 years. They enjoyed all the programs of the church, especially the Adventurers. This group took annual trips all over the United States. Bob’s favorites were Yellowstone and Amish country in Ohio.

Bob was an amazing handy man. He could fix anything! His favorite spot was his workshop, where he spent hours on his current project.

Bob spent his last five years at C.C. Young. He went on Hospice in 2020. The family would like to thank the hospice team for their loving care, especially the last week of his life.

Bob’s Celebration of Life service will be held at Wilshire Baptist Church on Friday, February 17, 2023 at 11:00am, followed by a reception in Community Hall
