Robert P. Garza, 60, of Dallas, TX passed away on March 1, 2024. Robert was born an identical twin and the youngest of 6 children in Corpus Christi, Tx to Fernando and Magdalena Garza on March 11, 1963. Robert graduated from UT Arlington School of Architecture in May of 1987.
Robert was a loving, tender, selfless, brave, humble, hardworking, and caring husband, father, brother, son and friend. He loved tennis, played in mixed double tournaments, and was a ping pong champion.
Rob’s love for God was abundant in all that he did. There is an interesting character found in the Old Testament whose name was Bezalel, who was the craftsman and designer that produced the most famous piece of furniture of all time—the Ark of the Covenant. God filled him with skill, ability and knowledge in all crafts, just as God did for Rob. His commitment to good design is an unspoken testimony to the glory of God.
Rob met the love of his life in 1982 and married her on May 5, 1990. They planted their roots in Oak Cliff and raised their two beautiful children, Savie and Nick, in “the green house on the hill”. Rob’s passion for preservation began with their first home and he continued his preservation work to improve his community by renovating homes on his own street. His love for his neighborhood family was evident with every breakfast gathering, Thanksgiving and Christmas or just coming over to enjoy a drink by the fire. Rob was the ultimate host and enjoyed every minute with his family, friends, and neighbors.
Robert was passionate and dedicated to his architectural work. He and his twin brother, Rick, incorporated RPGA Design Group in the early 1990s. The firm grew from humble beginnings to a prestigious award-winning firm. As one of the founding partners of RPGA, one of Rob’s many accomplishments includes the personal mentoring and nurturing of many individuals who have gone on to achieve successful careers in architecture. The relationships and successes in his career along with his beautiful personality will leave a legacy that will be remembered by all.
Rob’s heart, work ethic, and incredible talent led him to receive numerous accolades and awards. Some of his most recognizable projects are the Highland Park DPS and Townhall, the Southlake DPS Headquarters and the Southlake North DPS Training Facility.
Not only was Rob an accomplished architect and an incredible husband and father, but he was also a beloved and respected community member. He participated in countless volunteer projects and made numerous contributions to Preservation Dallas. These award-winning, historically protected projects will live on through many generations.
Rob was a great friend to many. His life-long friends will always remember his love of life, his readiness to help, and his willingness to be there for them in their times of need.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents Fernando and Magdalena Garza.
Robert is survived by his spouse, Brenda P Garza, daughter, Savannah Hawkins (Danny Hawkins) and son Nick Garza. Siblings Richard P Garza, Lolly Guerra, Fernando Garza, Yolanda Gonzales, and Maggie P. Garza along with their spouses and many nieces, and nephews.
Robert’s Memorial service will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Saturday, March 9th at 10:30 am, followed by a celebratory reception of his life at the Turner House at 12 pm.
