Services will be held at Grove Hill Funeral Home on Monday, November 5th, with viewing and visitation at 11 am followed by services at 12 pm.
He was born April 21st, 1919 near Cushing TX, Nacogdoches County, to Lena and R.V. Ayres. Robert was one of five children and was known as “Mutt” by his family and friends in East Texas. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1938, and his service included two years in the Aleutian Islands. Robert was honorably discharged in 1945 as a staff sergeant. He returned to Texas and his wife and young son. Robert and wife Kimmie were a rock-solid team, raising four sons in the Pleasant Grove section of Dallas. Robert had a long career as a telephone switchman for Southwestern Bell. After retiring, Kimmie and Robert moved to La Rue, Texas where they enjoyed over 20 years of country living. They loved to take their travel trailer on the road and had many adventures around the nation.
He was a devoted Christian, involved in his church and community. Mr. Ayres was a faithful and understanding husband, a terrific father, a doting grandfather, a loving great-grandfather and an even better great-great-grandfather. Anyone who knew Robert thought well of him. He had sterling character, was always kind and his integrity was impeccable.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Kimmie, siblings Inez Sitton, Autry Ayres and Anita Lavender, daughter-in-law Wilma Ayres and grandsons Asa and Jason. He is survived by brother Luea and wife Estleen, sons Robert A., Loyd and wife Sandy, Jerry and wife Janice, Neal and wife Marge. Also surviving Robert are 7 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
