Richard Edward “Dick” McCormick passed away of natural causes on October 17, 2018, in Dallas, Texas. He was born October 21, 1924, in Parsons, Kansas, to parents Gertrude (O’Connor) and Richard McCormick, Jr.
McCormick was well known in Parsons. He was a football and basketball teammate of legendary Dale Hall. Dick started with the Katy Railroad as a timekeeper on a track gang south of Parsons in the summer of 1942. He returned to the railroad in 1948 after his military service and while attending Parsons Junior College and Kansas City College of Commerce. Dick advanced through several positions in the operating departments and was elected Assistant Treasurer in 1963 and Treasurer in 1978. McCormick retired in 1988 following the Katy/U.P. merger.
He served his country during World War II as a Sgt. Major in the 7th Fighter Command at Iwo Jima. He was the last surviving member of HQRS Unit.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, wife Norma, son Mike and brother Rev. Harold McCormick. He is survived by his children and their spouses: Patrick and Gloria, Linda and Doug, Kevin and April, Teresa and David, and Mary and Carl, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A visitation and rosary will be held on Sunday, October 28, 2018, beginning at 5:30 pm at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, October 29, 2018, at 10:00 am at Calvary Hill Mausoleum North Chapel. Interment will follow in Calvary Hill Cemetery.
