Dr. Paul Arthur Stern, born September 26, 1921 to Sam and Goldie Stern passed away July 11, 2010 in Dallas. He is preceded in death by his wife, Leah (Winterman) Stern and survived by his sons Jack R. Stern, J.D., Robert B. Stern, D.O. and Paul R. Stern, PhD. Dr. Stern received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Wayne University in 1942 and his Doctor of Osteopathy from Kansas City College of Osteopathy and Surgery in 1945. He was a founding member of Dallas Osteopathic Hospital. Dr. Stern began his long and illustrious career by completing his residency in Anesthesiology at Detroit Osteopathic Hospital. From 1951 to 1977, he served as Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at Dallas Osteopathic Hospital and from 1964 through 1967, was on the Board of Governors for the American Osteopathic College of Anesthesiologists. In 1957, Dr. Stern and others founded the Society for the Prevention of Anesthetic and Surgical Misadventure. Dr Stern’s commitment to education and Anesthesiology continued his whole life, exhibited by serving as Director of Medical Education at Dallas Osteopathic Hospital from 1967-1973 and Professor and Chairman of the University of North Texas Health Science Center, Department of Anesthesiology from 1972-1997. He served as a consultant to the National Board of Examiners for Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons from 1980-1986. Involved in many professional societies; A.O.A., A.O.C.A., A.S.A., S.E.A., T.O.M.A., and T.S.A., he served as the Chairman of the Osteopathic Colleges committee of the A.O.C.A. as well as on the Editorial committee. He received a Distinguished Service Award from A.O.C.A. in 1985. From 1953 to 1988, he continued to be well-respected in his field receiving numerous research grants and authoring several refereed research papers. In 1965 he served on the Greater Community Council-Health Panel as well as many other civic health related appointments.
