Paul's happiest time as a federal prosecutor was in the early 90's, when U.S. Attorney Paul Coggins, in response to a dysfunctional state criminal justice system, started prosecuting business robberies under the Hobbs Act (interference with interstate commerce by robbery).  Paul, Candy Heath and I prosecuted these cases, obtained convictions and serious jail time for the offenders. 
  
Paulie loved his family and spoke about them frequently. 

Eternal rest grant unto Paul David Macaluso, my friend, O Lord, and light perpetual shine upon him.

Paul was a pleasure to work with and to know. Not only was he an outstanding lawyer but he also had a wonderful sense of humor.  I still remember some of the pranks Paul pulled on Joe and, of course, Joe's retaliatory pranks.

I never hesitated putting Paul on the most challenging cases. You knew that he would handle them like the pro he was.

The bar will be a duller place without him. 

Paul was a character, and 40 years ago, when I was a baby Defense lawyer who never prosecuted, and proud of that,  people like Paul and bunch of others were very intimidating in their own inimitable way. Had cases against Paul on State and Federal level, and he was always a gentleman, always very nice, friendly, and respectful, not just to me, but to everyone else as well, which was very much appreciated. He seemed to wear life like a loose garment and had some interesting idiosyncrasies. Oh, he was also a very good prosecutor, who had extremely high ethical standards. There are many people who knew Paul better than I, but he was someone we all looked up to, no pun intended, and it was always kind of fun running into him around town outside of the law arena.  My thoughts and prayers for Paul and his family, who have suffered great losses.  Vic and Mary Beth Sasso

Paul and I were cousins and playmates in Chicago where we were born.  As a child, my family moved to Arizona and Paul and I didn't see each other again until Dallas, where we both practiced law, he as a prosecutor and I generally.  Other lawyers had nothing but highest praise for Paul's skill and character.

I cared for Paul that's how I met him. We took many car rides all around his Neighberhood, especialy the lake. He loved to ride around the lake! We would walk through the North Park Mall. He liked to Walk. He was such a sweet person!


Paul was a caring friend , an amazing trial attorney, with a wonderful smile and quick wit. We tried a couple of death penalty cases and he had the ability to be brilliant during jury selection and also break the tension during recess. He loved his family and his friends and will be missed by all.

Pauli was a great guy. I was a baby federal prosecutor and Paul took me under his wings. I’ll miss that wit and killer smile.

Paul was a tremendous trial lawyer and a dedicated public servant.  He excelled at prosecuting murder cases.  His cross-examinations were simply the best.  Paul also had to be one of the greatest story tellers in Texas.   And anyone who worked with Paul knew what great love he had for family and friends.  

Paul will be missed by many.  May God bless Paul and his family.

I was a classmate of Paul’s at the SMU Law School and considered him a good friend and a fun person to be around.  His sense of humor and subtle sarcasm were always fun to hear.  I’ll never forget his moot court trial where I was a witness for the other side.  On cross examination he got up in my face and started to laugh uncontrollably while repeating  my testimony and soon we were both laughing uncontrollably.  I don’t think the Dallas attorney who was acting as a judge appreciated our courtroom decor!

I worked with Paul in the DA's office from 1985-late 1989.  When he was promoted to a Super Chief, I was his secretary.  He was fun to work with and an excellent prosecutor.  He was well liked and had a great personality.   RIP Paul.
