Paul Lawrence Johnson, Sr., was born September 4, 1937, to the late Lewis L. and Vertie B. Johnson. He was the only child born to this union. Paul accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and began his walk with the Lord at the Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church in the Shiloh Community, Oakwood, Texas. Paul received his foundational education with the St. Paul Shiloh Schools in Oakwood. Paul furthered his education at Del Mar Community College in Corpus Christi, Texas.
After attending college, Paul courageously entered the United States Armed Forces. He valiantly served six years in the United States Army. After his honorable discharge from the Army, Paul continued committed military service as an Army Reservist. It was during this time that he met and married the love and rock of his life, Ruby Jewel Grant. Together, Paul and Ruby welcomed the birth of five children and experienced the joys and fruits of family and nurturing love. Paul’s cherished bond with Ruby continued for 54 years of marriage prior to Ruby’s eternal rest.
Throughout his life, Paul possessed an unwavering character reflected in his strong work ethic and the guiding principles of family. He modeled determination, resilience, and perseverance. Paul was employed with the Kilsby-Roberts Tubing Company where he retired after more than 20 years of dependable and dedicated service. His plan-oriented, business approach to life sparked inspiration and motivation for others to emulate. He faced life displaying firm standards and setting high expectations.
Paul’s commitment and loyalty resonated in his Christian service. As a member of Glendale Presbyterian Church for over 50 years, Paul shared his talents and oversight in a number of positions. He provided leadership as a Deacon, Elder, and Building and Grounds Chair. Additionally, Paul was a member of various church auxiliaries including the Finance and Administration committees. Paul also represented Glendale Presbyterian Church through his participation on several Grace Presbytery district-governing committees. Paul’s reverence and support for his church encompassed a wide-ranging presence and influential contributions.
Paul leaves to cherish his memory: children, Regina Johnson, Cheryl Mosby (O’Don), Paul L. Johnson, Jr. (Karen), Deidre Henderson (Demetri), and Michael Johnson (Armine); grandchildren, DeAundra Henderson, Adrienne Mosby-Jeter, Paul L. Johnson, III, Ariel Boyce (Jabrelle), Valorie Johnson, and Sebastian Johnson; two step-grandsons, Demetrique Henderson (Kenya) and Alfred Boss, IV; great-grandchildren, Marley and Bailey Jeter, Jazelle, Jalaya, and Janelle Boyce; and one aunt, Georgia Malone. Two great-grandchildren, Donovan and Jaidyn Mosby, preceded him in death. Numerous loving relatives and friends will also continue to cherish the memory of Paul L. Johnson, Sr.
