What thought immediately comes to mind when you think of Oscar Bonny Church? A man with a big smile and a mischievous twinkle in his eyes or perhaps an expressive piano player shaking and rocking the bench with his interpretation of “Up a Lazy River”. Maybe you knew the calm caring man who could charm any infant to sleep, gently wipe tears away while listening and consoling those in need, or a loving and giving who man who loved life and tried to live it to the fullest.
Bonny never met a stranger. He loved Texas, the Dallas Cowboys and his orange and white Pontiac. Games of any kind fascinated him (he loved to win) and he boasted proudly that the computer told him he “couldn’t play black jack anymore because he was counting cards!”
Bonny loved two wonderful women; and, felt privileged and blessed to have had them in his life and been loved by them. Being a man who readily expressed the love and the pride he felt for his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren he was a teaser and teller of stories. “Fit as a fiddle” or stating he “couldn’t be any better than a chicken could chase a donkey across the road” were expressions he frequently used.
Loving our Lord and being a part of his church was important. Laughing, then singing in his gravely two note voice, Bonny would always say that “When the Roll is Called Up Yonder” (pointing to heaven) I’ll be there.
Bonny Church leaves a legacy of a life filed with the sharing of love, laughter, joy, and of a man determined to live life as positively and as long as possible. He was always (and will always be) treasured!
