Though, her life had challenges—she never complained. Orphaned at 8 years old, she and her younger sister and brother would grow up at an orphanage in Waco—The Methodist Home. Not only was she happy at the orphanage, she went back during college summer breaks, and eventually married her husband of 58 years, David B. McCall, Jr. at the Methodist Home, ever grateful for the experiences she had there.
While a student at Texas Tech (which was founded the same year that she was), she decided that she wanted to fly. American Airlines had an open call for young ladies interested in being stewardesses to go to the Baker Hotel in Dallas for interviews. When she arrived, and saw how many young ladies were there to apply, she turned and left; but, immediately turned back and went through the process and was one of two selected.
Forced to resign from American Airlines when she married, she then finished her college degree at the University of North Texas and taught fourth grade in Plano and Richardson.
Ever cheerful, positive, upbeat and with a spirit of love that was larger than love—Nellie McCall was truly an example of how best to live a life.
Pre-deceased by her husband David B. McCall, Jr., and son, David B. McCall, III, and survived by her son, Brian McCall; daughters-in-law Jenny McCall and Sharon McCall; grandchildren Meredith McCall, and Cam McCall and his wife Carly; great grandson Hunter McCall; nieces and nephews whom she very much loved, and innumerable friends.
