Melvin Jean Nealy Sandles was born on May 5,1952 in Midway, Texas. She was the sixth child of ten born to George and Lutish (Johnson) Nealy. She grew up in Midway, and after graduating in the top of her class from Marian Anderson High School in 1970, she moved to Dallas to attend El Centro College.
Upon obtaining her degree, Melvin Jean began her career as a medical billing/coding instructor for Blue Cross. Over the span of her working years, she held several positions related to medical billing for various medical practices, and for a brief span, she again taught and served as Medical Insurance Billing and Coding Program Chair at Everest College. Before retiring in 2018, Melvin Jean had been employed for ten years with Methodist Health Systems.
On August 11,1973, Melvin Jean married Larry Donnell Sandles, and to this union was born one beautiful daughter, Marcy Lutish Sandles.
Melvin Jean accepted Christ at the former Hatcher Street Church of Christ, now known as Southern Hills Church of Christ. She was a member for many years before moving her membership in 2006 to the Southside Church of Christ, which would later be known as North Hampton Road Church of Christ, and finally the Lancaster Church of Christ. While a member of this congregation, Melvin was very active in the Hospitality and Ladies Bible Class ministries. In July 2023, Melvin Jean rejoined the Southern Hills congregation where she had been attending until her death.
Known affectionately by her family as “Tiny,” Melvin Jean enjoyed cooking and spending time with family and friends. She also enjoyed her solitude and spent much of her free time reading and working puzzles.
Melvin Jean was preceded in death by her parents, George and Lutish Nealy, two brothers, George Nealy and Herbert Nealy, one sister, Erma Jean Harris, a niece, Veronica Harris, and a nephew, Gregory Denby.
Melvin Jean leaves to cherish her precious memory: husband Larry, daughter Marcy, sisters- Ruby Franklin, Velma Nealy, George Ree Grace (Eugene), Gwendolyn Marsh, and Debbra Nealy, brother Claude Nealy, sister-in-law JoAnn Nealy, uncle James Earl Nealy, and a host of other relatives and friends.
