Mary Sue Phelps was born October 31st, 1929 in Mesquite,TX to Samuel Guy and Etta Marie King Jones. She grew up in both Mesquite and Dallas and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1947. Mary Sue was a housewife raising her 3 children as well as helping to run her husbands family owned Vanity Cleaners of Dallas and her fathers grocery store, S.G. Jones Thrifty-Tee, in the 1960’s. She went on to have a career in the medical field working at East Town Osteopathic Hospital and as a Office Manager for a physicians group Cording, DePetris and Tompkins where she retired. Mary Sue was a phenomenal seamstress, loved to crochet, cook and had a way of putting her special touch on everything she did. She will best be remembered by her loving smile and the dedication and devotion she consistently showed to her family. She was known as “Mary Sue or Sue” to many, “Momma” by several, “Wife” to one but her most treasured name was “Momma Sue” which was given to her by her grandchildren. Mary Sue was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years Charles Ray Phelps. She is survived by her son Charles “Chuck” Phelps of Dallas and daughters Guyann Gaines (Lee/deceased) of Alvarado, TX and Raetta Phelps Cochran of Dallas; Grandchildren Taylor Leigh Gaines Sanders (Jonathan) of Alvarado, TX, Corey Lynn Phelps (Teresa) of Spring, TX and Kingsley Rae Cochran of Denton, TX; great-grand children Austin Blake Sanders of Alvarado, TX, Lee Walker Sanders of Alvarado, TX, Taegan Moon Phelps of Spring, TX, Ashton Phelps of Spring, TX and Kailey Lane Berkey of Spring, TX; sister Sammy Lou Spillman of Forney, TX and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Mary Sue went quietly and peacefully to be with our Lord on February 29th, 2020 with family by her side. Services will be held Thursday March 5th from 12-2pm at Grove Hill Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Grove Hill Memorial Park.
