Our dear Mary Jane Noone Murphy was faithful, humble, generous and extraordinary.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, to Patrick Joseph Noone and Delia Kenny Noone, Mary was the oldest of six first-generation Irish-American children. Mary was a natural leader, an enduring role model for her siblings, her son and the following generations of family who adored her and called her Mom, Mamie and Gammy.
The love of Mary’s life was Frank Xavier Murphy, an executive at Pfizer Inc. Frank and Mary were blessed to travel the world. Naturally curious and an avid student of history, culture and literature, Mary soaked in everything she saw, read and experienced.
Mary’s greatest joy was her son Patrick, quickly followed by her granddaughter, Mary Kate. Pat, daughter-in-law Ginny and Mary Kate visited Mary’s Cape Cod home often and also loved their many Christmas holidays in North Carolina.
Mary had a long and successful career at Pfizer Inc. as an executive secretary ,while also attending Fordham University. A workplace pioneer, Mary was among the first to “job share” and was featured on the national news. Even after Frank’s death in 1983, Mary remained close with her Pfizer friends and colleagues, attending the annual meeting of shareholders for many years after her retirement.
To celebrate Mary’s 90th birthday, sister Anne McDonough organized a surprise party in Delray Beach, FL. More than 40 family members came from all over the country to honor dear Mamie.
Generous and faithful, Mary supported the dreams of so many. She saw the needs of her loved ones and kindly served those needs. She is an example to us all and leaves an enduring legacy. She stood up for her values and beliefs, respectfully. Her strength, along with her Catholic faith and the deep love of family, defined this extraordinary woman.
Mary passed away peacefully in her home at Edgemere in Dallas cared for by her devoted nieces, Kathleen Sparnroft, Peggy Barranca and Nora Anne Ryan.
Mary is survived by her son Patrick, daughter-in-law Ginny and granddaughter Mary Kate. Also left to cherish her memory are sisters Patricia McCafferty and Nora Ryan. Many loving nieces and nephews will always remember their wonderful Aunt Mamie. She was preceded in death by brother John Noone, sisters Catherine Magee and Anne McDonough.
Mary Murphy’s family would like to thank Dr. Jessica Hainsfurther at Baylor Scott and White Health for her loving care, as well as John Muia at Edgemere and the devoted caregivers at Angel Valley Hospice.
