Manning Shannon, beloved father, brother and friend, passed peacefully on September 6, 2024 surrounded by family. Born September 10, 1962 to Elizabeth Leachman Shannon and Dr. Manning B. Shannon, Jr., he graduated from Highland Park High School in 1981 and the University of Texas in 1985, where he was a Kappa Alpha. He was forever passionate about the Longhorns.
While at Highland Park Manning, #40, was a running back for the Scots. Coach Bevers nicknamed him “The Bread Truck,” as he might have been “Slow, but he always delivered!” His athletic ability was equally impressive in golf, where he remains tied for the lowest round at Dallas Country Club with his nearly flawless swing. In 1989 Manning married Susan Kelley and together they welcomed two beautiful daughters, Liz and Abby. Though their marriage ended after ten years, his dedication to his girls never wavered. Every day was spent cheering them on with his trademark enthusiasm. They were truly the joy of his life.
Manning founded and owned Manning Shannon Insurance Agency, earning numerous awards throughout his career. His work ethic was matched only by his fondness for history and things long-forgotten. He authored Little Sandy…A Look Back, a history of the over 100 year old fishing club in East Texas. Manning’s research involved tracking down archives and interviewing families, dedicated to preserving the past. He had a knack for connecting with others, making friends wherever he went with his quick wit, humble nature and captivating stories.
Above all, Manning will be remembered for the joy he brought to those who knew him. His legacy of laughter, loyalty, and storytelling will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
Manning is survived by his daughters Elizabeth Kelley Shannon and Abigail Carter Shannon; sister Connie Shannon; brothers (spouse) Jim Francis (Debbie), Charles Francis (Stephen Bottum), Will Francis (Sarah Jane); nephews Jimmy Francis (Kathryn), Bo Francis, William Francis and Thomas Francis Bottum; niece Sarah Katherine Stenseth (Travis); aunts Lynda Leachman and Anne Rooth; and numerous Leachman/Lacy/Moehl cousins.
