Louis Odell Moore, Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and community leader, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2024, in Dallas, Texas. Born on December 5, 1933, in Lyons, Texas, Louis was the youngest of eleven children of Drew and Elizabeth Green Moore.
Louis graduated from Jones High School in Snook, Texas, in 1952. He proudly served his country as an Army veteran from 1952 to 1956. Following his military service, he pursued higher education and graduated from Prairie View A&M University in 1959.
On March 20, 1966, Louis married, Jessie Coleman Moore. Together, they built a family filled with love and warmth.
Louis dedicated 30 years of his professional life to the U.S. Postal Service, where he was known for his diligence and integrity. After retiring from the Postal Service, he continued his service to the community as a part-time Bailiff with the Dallas County Sheriff's Department.
Louis was deeply involved in his community and held several leadership positions. He served as president of the National Alliance of Postal and Federal Employees, advocating for his colleagues' rights and welfare. As chair of the Jones High School Reunion Committee, he fostered a spirit of unity and nostalgia among alumni. Additionally, he served as chair of the Hidden Valley Homeowners' Association, working tirelessly to enhance and unite his neighborhood. In 1946, Louis attended the inaugural Annual Moore Family Reunion and remained dedicated to the Reunion and served as a leader each year.
Louis was preceded in death by his parents, Drew and Elizabeth Green Moore, and his ten siblings, brothers, A. J. Moore, Robert W. Moore, Rufus C. Moore and John A. Moore and sisters, Vera Moore Nix, Allie M. Franklin, Hattie Gertrude Nixon, Mille M. Sparks, Darthulia Moore Jones, and Drucilla Moore Jones.
He leaves behind a loving family who will always cherish his memory, his devoted wife, Jessie Coleman Moore; his children, Rosalind “Pewee” Moore, Evelyn “Top Cat” Moore, Louis Odell Moore, Jr., and Myashia Moore; his grandchildren, Ariel, Brittany, and Anthony; his great-grandchildren, Jacala, Maison, and Amiya; and his nieces and nephews, Dr. Gradyne Brown, Frederick Nixon, Louis Nix, and Gayle Sparks.
Louis Odell Moore, Sr. will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his country, and his community. His legacy of service, leadership, and kindness will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
