He was born in Michigan City, Indiana on December 10, 1930. Lawrence graduated from Chesterton H.S. and attended St. Joseph College in Collegeville, Indiana. He was married to Ruth Smith on October 8, 1949.
Lawrence had a career in industrial sales with Federal Mogul and then was self-employed into his retirement. He was a star basketball player in high school and known for never missing a free-throw, racking up 14 free-throw points in a row in a single quarter. Lawrence went on to play basketball in college. He was a devoted family man, hosting family dinners every Sunday. He was never happier than when he was surrounded by his family. Lawrence was a member of Hobby Crafters making toys for charity and was in charge of hospitality at St. Pius X Over-55 Club for many years. He was of Irish descent and was an avid Notre Dame fan. In his spare time he enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, grilling and cooking.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Ruth Smith.
Lawrence is survived by his children, Laura Smith Wilchester (Jim), Gayle Smith Monier-Leos (Frosty), Lawrence "Larry" Smith (Kendall), Rebecca Smith Sheppard, and Daniel Smith; daughter-in-law, Linda Smith; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A rosary for Lawrence will be held Friday, July 19, 2024 at 10:30 AM at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 1305 Damascus Rd, Rockwall, Texas, followed by a memorial mass at 11:00 AM.
