Our beautiful Julia died surrounded by her loving family. She was born and raised in Shreveport, LA. Julia attended C.E. Byrd High School, where she began her love and success with sports, art, intellectual pursuits and forming life-long friendships. Her competitive interest focused on the process of the game whether through teamwork, strategy or fun and not just winning. She attended Sophie Newcomb of Tulane University, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She graduated cum laude with a B.A. from Centenary College in Shreveport, LA. Julia was married to Edgar Galloway, MD, from 1957 until his death in 1987. She was an active member of every community she lived in throughout her life. In Shreveport, she was active in the vestry of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and St. Marks Church. Julia also served on a variety of civic, golf, tennis and art organizations, including being past president of the Junior League of Shreveport and sustainer member in Dallas, TX.
Julia discovered Crested Butte, Colorado, in 1985. Some of her many involvements and passions included The Center for the Arts, Union Congregational Church, spearheading the formation of All Saints in the Mountains Episcopal Church, The Butte Beauties hiking and social club, golf at Skyland Country Club and charter member, board member and advisory board member of the Crested Butte Community Foundation. Her passion for art blossomed in Crested Butte where she displayed her work in galleries in the area.
At the age of 61, Julia returned to pursue her academic and spiritual endeavors attending and graduating with a masters in religion from the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, TX. Soon thereafter, Julia married Andy Shoup of Dallas, TX, and they began a new chapter in life spanning 22 years of love, adventure and travel. Their life together in Dallas was filled with friendships, community involvement and a continuation of her lifelong pursuit of spiritual and religious study. Her extensive involvement with the church included co-facilitating the Un-Ending Conversation group class at St. Michael's and All Angels, ushering committee and LEV (Lay Eucharistic Visitor). She was also a member of the women's golf association of the Dallas Country Club and Ridotto Social Club.
Julia's life was ultimately defined by her love of God, her love of family and her love of the many varied and genuine friendships she made throughout her life.
Julia is predeceased by her parents, George William Conger and Lillian (Jenkins) Conger, and her brother, J. William Conger. She is survived by her devoted husband, Andrew James Shoup, Jr.; her siblings, Betty Conger Cannon and George Robert Conger; her uncle, John Stone Jenkins; her children, Ed Galloway, Lillian Galloway Cobb, Sarah Barrow Galloway, Glena Galloway Miller; her step-children, Catherine Shoup Collins, Andrew James Shoup, III; her grandchildren, Joanie, Carter and Harry Galloway-Kahn, Catherine Cartie, Steven Cobb, Julia Alford, Megan Freeman, Gregg Bennett, Eric Jernigan, Sydney Jernigan, Caroline Collins, Drew Shoup, Sophie Shoup; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial will be held at 4 pm on Saturday, January 29, at St. Michael's and All Angels, 8001 Douglas Ave., Dallas, 75225, with a reception to follow.
