John Wesley Hickman died peacefully at his home Monday, July 11, 2011, at the age of 104. Wes was born in Westville, Illinois on September 16, 1906 to Dr. John M. & Maybelle Hickman. He attended the University of Illinois and graduated in 1928 with a BA in Business Administration. Wes first worked as a statistician in Chicago. He married Lydia Drew in 1930. They had 2 sons, Dr. John Hickman and Robert F. Hickman. Wes moved to Dallas in 1934. In 1936 helped form the Brokerage Firm of Schnider, Burnett, Hickman. This was the first firm to register a Texas corporation with the F.T.C. and was a member of the US Stock Exchange. During his career he was instrumental in funding and selling some of the largest local companies of the day, was a valuable member of many corporate boards of directors and raised capital for numerous municipalities. He continued to enjoy following economic trends and his financial insights over the past century were recently featured in a Dallas Morning News business page article. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Dallas Theological Seminary for over 26 years. He was a member of the Dallas Petroleum Club and Northwood Country Club. In 1997, Wes married Rosalind Wood. Not only was Wes a leader to his family, in business and the community, but most importantly, his life served as a testimony to his faithful service to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
He is preceded in death by Lydia Hickman and Dr. John Hickman. He is survived by his wife Rosalind, son Robert F. Hickman, stepson Dr. Paul Schyve, five grandsons, John & Kathy Hickman, Robert F. Hickman II, Jim Hickman, Rick & Christine Hickman, Lt. Col. Thomas W. Lewis and two great granddaughters, Raith and Madison Hickman.
The family will receive visitors Thursday July 14 from 6-8pm at Sparkman Hillcrest. A memorial service will be held at 2pm Friday at Sparkman’s Northwest Hwy Chapel.
