John V. Gilhooly passed away in his home in Dallas, Texas on February 5, 2013. He was born on October 25, 1929, in Providence, R.I. After college, John spent an enjoyable four and a half years as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, most of it in the Air Training Command in Texas, where he met his future wife, Mary Agnes Ney, a south Texas rancher’s daughter and the love of his life. He and Mary were married on June 15, 1957.
In addition to a wonderful wife, he was blessed with two fine sons, who gave him a few moments of concern and a lifetime of pride and joy. John and Mary had the pleasure, from time to time, of being hands-on grandparents to their grandson, J. R. Gilhooly.
John served as Assistant General Counsel of two major Dallas-based corporations. He retired as a Senior Vice President on the corporate staff of Texas Instruments. A lifelong Catholic, he served as President of the St. Thomas Aquinas Parish Parents’ Association for a year, as a Eucharistic Minister for many years and, with his wife, served as co-chair of the first capital campaign of the parish since its founding. He also volunteered with Meals on Wheels and Catholic Charities Immigration & Legal Services.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick and Margaret Gilhooly, and his sister, Margaret Brett (Howard) of Providence, R.I. He is survived by his widow; his sons, Kevin (Virginia) and Stephen; his grandson, J. R. (Ginger); his great-grandsons, Caleb and Carson; his niece, Claudia Brett, of Providence, RI, and his nephew, Christopher Brett, of Mt. Washington, PA.
A Rosary will be held at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home at 4:00 pm on Sunday, February, 10, 2012 with visitation to follow until 6:00 pm, 7405 W. Northwest Highway, Dallas, TX. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 6306 Kenwood Ave., Dallas, TX 75214 at 10:00 am on Monday, February 11, 2012 with Father John LiBone, celebrant. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Thomas Aquinas Parish or the charity of your choice.
