John Paul Cheek, Jr., MD, went home to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on September 19, 2013. John was a loving, generous man filled with compassion, wisdom, integrity and humility. He enriched the lives of many and left the world a better place. His warm smile and friendly manner will be sadly missed.
Born June 30, 1935 in Russellville, Arkansas, he was the only child of Dorothy Peak Cheek and John Paul Cheek. His father was an engineer involved in heavy construction. As a result he moved all over Arkansas and some of Texas and Oklahoma as a child, never spending a full year in any one school. He graduated from high school in Fort Smith, AR in 1953, then attended undergraduate school at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. He continued with medical school at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock and completed his internship at the University of Mississippi. John then served as a Captain in the Air Force from 1961-1963 stationed at MacDill Air Force Base during the Bay of Pigs crisis.
He completed his dermatology residency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor where he met his beloved wife, Alicia Quigley.
John opened his private dermatology practice in Dallas in 1966, at which time he was the first person in the state of Texas to perform the Mohs procedure for the treatment of recurrent skin cancers. He loved the practice of dermatology and was deeply devoted to his patients. Aside from his ability, insight and skill as a physician, his care and compassionate interest in his patients made him a highly trusted professional and friend. He was a life member of the American Academy of Dermatology and a fellow in the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery.
John led a Christ-centered life that was evident in both his private and professional life. He was a family man above all else and was deeply committed to all activities in which his 3 sons were involved. He started coaching the boys' soccer teams and then became an ardent supporter of their involvement in football, baseball, wrestling and tennis. As mentor, coach and friend to his 3 boys, he led by example. He was devoted to his adoring wife Alicia. They were a united team in raising their children and were fortunate enough to enjoy many years of wonderful travel, as well as sharing the boundless joy of being adoring grandparents.
John was predeceased by his parents and is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Alicia; his sons: Taylor Cheek and his wife Melanie of Austin, Brian Cheek of Austin, and Carter Cheek and his wife Shannon of Dallas; grandchildren: Chloe, Courtney and Taylor Cheek of Austin and Addison and John Cheek of Dallas; sister-in-law Kathi Troendle and her husband Roy of Bay St. Louis, MS.
The family would like to thank the attentive and caring physicians and nurses at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas. They are also so appreciative of the compassionate care he received at Walnut Place and the caring professionals at Home Kidney Care.
A memorial service celebrating John’s life will be held at 2:30 pm, Tuesday, September 24 at Northwest Bible Church, 8505 Douglas Avenue, with a reception to follow. In lieu of the usual remembrances, donations may be made to Dallas Theological Seminary, 3909 Swiss Avenue, Dallas, TX 75204 or Northwest Bible Church, 8505 Douglas Avenue, Dallas, TX 75225.
