Greatly loved, Joan will be dearly missed by her husband, children, grandchildren and friends. She was born on a cotton farm July 3, 1930 near Mosheim in Bosque County, Texas. Joan was the fifth girl born to Charlie Walker and Una Odel Walker. She was a successful girls basketball player for Mosheim High School, helping them win several trophies in district and state tournaments before graduating in 1947. After moving to Waco, she began a successful career in cosmetology with training from Charles of the Ritz in New York and became a buyer for the cosmetic department at Goldstein-Magill. Joan’s career took her to Austin where she was Goodfriends’ buyer for cosmetics and a model at LBJ television station.
Joan met the love of her life, Jim Webb, while drinking coffee one day in Austin 1953.They married in 1954, and she provided wonderful support while he finished his law degree at University of Texas Austin. Their son, J. Duncan, was born while they were living in Dallas before Jim was drafted into the United States Navy. A hard-working and dedicated woman, Joan continued her career in cosmetics at a department store in California and I Magnum in Washington until her daughter, Priscilla, was born and Joan’s full attention turned towards her children and husband. After spending a short while in Louisiana, the family settled permanently in north Dallas.
Joan was very active in her community as a member of the Footnote Book Club, The
Northwood Club, Richardson PTA, a Sunday School teacher at Spring Valley Methodist Church, and a lifetime member of Northwood Women’s Club. Joan was an excellent seamstress designing dresses for her daughter, suits and shirts for her husband and son, and hand-worked tablecloths for the home. She loved to decorate and entertain. Birthdays and holidays, especially Christmas, were showered with beautiful, meticulous décor and overflowing love for her grandchildren and family. A true Proverbs 31 woman.
Joan was beautiful inside and out. She was a Christian and a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed traveling around the United States and shopping for antiques in London and the Swiss Alps. Dining and dancing in Colorado Springs each summer were treasured times for her and Jim.
