He was born in Paducah, Texas, on December 9, 1941. His family moved to Lubbock where he attended Lubbock schools and graduated from Lubbock High School. He graduated from Texas Tech in 1964 with a degree in Finance.
After college he moved to Dallas to work for Republic National Bank as a real estate appraiser. It is here that he met his wife, Trudy, who also went to work at Republic after graduating from college.
This was the beginning of Jerry’s long career in Real Estate Banking. He held executive and managerial positions at First National Bank of Commerce, New Orleans; First Commerce Real Estate Corporation, New Orleans; City Realty Advisors, New Orleans; MBank, Dallas; Northpark Bank, Dallas; and Comerica Bank, Dallas.
Jerry loved to read and enjoyed many kinds of books. His favorite book was the Bible. He was a student of the Bible and read it every day. He attended Bible Study Fellowship once a week for 15 years. He was raised in the Christian faith from a very young age. He was a member of Lovers Lane United Methodist Church, where he enjoyed teaching sixth grade Sunday School and volunteering in other ministries of the church. Jerry was a kind and gentle person.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Hesta Powell, and his brother Houston Powell. He is survived by his wife Trudy and their daughter, Ashley, of Denver, Colorado. Jerry and Trudy would have been married 53 years on July 25.
A Celebration of Life will be held on July 18 at 2:00 PM at Lovers Lane United Methodist Church, Shipp Chapel, 9200 Inwood Road, Dallas. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Jerry’s memory to the North Texas Food Bank.
