James Edward Glasgow was born January 4, 1930 in Fairbanks Alaska, and lived in Chicken, Alaska for the first year of his life with his parents and older brothers Paul and Bill. The three boys then moved to Farmington, Iowa and later settled in Fairfield where they were raised by their paternal grandparents, George and Mary Glasgow.
Jim attended Fairfield High School and graduated third in his class and was a member of the baseball and track teams. After graduation, Jim attended Parsons College on an academic and track scholarship where he graduated with a B.S. in Mathematics. He went on to the University of Iowa and received his Masters in Mathematics. While supporting himself through college, Jim worked in a number of jobs at the Turner Hotel in Fairfield where he did everything from waiting tables to working the front desk. In the summers Jim worked on the railroad - Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad (CB&Q).
Upon completing his studies, Jim moved to Chicago where he met and married Gretchen Voge. He and Gretchen welcomed three children (Richard, Steve and Gail) in their first three years of marriage. In 1964, the family moved to Dallas and were blessed with three additional children (Alison, Heather and Meredith).
Jim had an accomplished career in the Actuarial Field. He was well known and respected as an actuary, executive, and business owner. He started his career at Continental Assurance in Chicago, IL and moved to Dallas to join Arthur Stedry Hanson, a leading actuarial consulting firm. Jim went on to found his own consultancy, Glasgow and Hudek which he later merged with Willis Corroon where he finished his career as an executive. Jim was a longstanding member of the North Dallas Rotary Club and served in various leadership capacities. He was also an original member of the Cooper Fitness Aerobics Center for 50+ years and could be spotted most days running the mile track faster than men in their 80's should be able to run, and in his later years exercising in the pool up until the age of 93.
Jim's most enduring accomplishment was his family of six children and ten grandchildren. He is remembered as an accomplished, generous, and selfless man who served as a role model for what a father and grandfather should be. He was a self-made man who worked his way out of poverty to create a loving, secure, and exciting future for his family. Jim was very proud of supporting his two sons and four daughters through Jesuit College Preparatory and Ursuline Academy respectively. He put those around him first and is an example to those who knew him that adversity is no hindrance to happiness. Jim will be missed for his keen sense of humor, penchant for crossword puzzles and love of pizza. To his children, he will always be remembered as the best dad in the world.
After a brief battle with Alzheimer's Disease, Jim passed away on April 20th surrounded by family. A memorial service will be held at St. Monica Catholic Church on Monday April 29th at 11:00AM.
Jim is preceded in death by his brothers Paul Glasgow and Bill Glasgow; grandmother Mary Glasgow; grandfather George Glasgow; mother- in-law Alice Voge Oetting; father-in-law R. Admiral Richard Voge.
