Hollis was born on March 6, 1922 to parents George and Willie Watson of Kingston, Texas. He had two sisters, MollieWatson Sadler and Nell Watson Florence, and one brother named Denver Watson. Hollis would often share stories aboutwhat it was like to grow up on a farm during the Great Depression. At the age of 15, Hollis left home to join the Civilian Conservation Corp. While serving with the CCC, he worked as a crew member on a dredging barge at White Rock Lake and helped build the pavilions in that area. He also worked with the dynamite unit and served in several states throughout the Northwest.
At the age of 18, Hollis joined the military and proudly served in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II. He served on the west coast providing coastal defense after the attacks on Pearl Harbor. Hollis was a top turret gunner for a B-17 bomber. He finished out the war as an air craft mechanic in Florida. In 1946, Hollis went to work as a butcher in Dallas, Texas. In the same year, Hollis met the love of his life, Ruby Lee, and they were married in 1947. The couple made their home in Dallas and were blessed with three sons, Joe Hollis Watson, Stephen Lee Watson, and Timothy Craig Watson. In 1953, Hollis began his own business called Watson Chemical Salvage Company. He was dedicated to making his business a success, and after forty-three years of diligent work, Hollis was able to retire and enjoy doing the things he loved. He enjoyed being outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Hollis and Ruby were blessed with sixty-five years of marriage, and they created a legacy of faith, devotion, and love.
Hollis was preceded in death by his loving wife, his parents and siblings, and one grandson, Joseph Aaron Watson. He is survived by his son, Joe; son Stephen and his wife Mary; son Timothy and his wife Connie. Hollis will be forever remembered by his grandchildren: Cheryl Escalante, Hollie Watson, Hailey Allen and her husband James; Jessica, DeAnna, Rachel, and Matthew Watson; Craig and Molly Watson. Hollis was also blessed with three beautiful great grandchildren: Jordan, Evelyn, and Audrey.
Hollis will always be remembered for being a pillar of strength for his family. Visitation and funeral services will be held at Laurel Land Funeral Home in Dallas, Texas on Thursday, June 27, 2019 @ 2:00 pm.
