Helen Canniff de Alvarez was born in Hamilton, Ontario, February 13, 1934, and departed this world, April 25, 2013. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Leo Paul de Alvarez, of Irving, Texas and her son, Alexis de Alvarez, of Houston, Texas, her daughter-in-law, Layne, and two grandchildren, Katherine and Benjamin. She is also survived by two nieces, Kathy Robinson Burch and Colleen Hand, and a nephew, David Robinson, of Ontario, Canada. She had a B.A. Honors degree from the University of Windsor, as well as a M.A. degree in philosophy. She also received the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Politics and Literature from the University of Dallas. She taught the Literary Sequence at the University of Dallas for decades and was an Instructor in Philosophy at Xavier University of New Orleans from 1960 to 1962. She was known internationally for her designs of rubrics for liturgical vestments. Memorial Rosary will be held Sunday night, April 28, 2013, 7 p.m., at the funeral home. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Monday, April 29, 2013 at the University of Dallas Chapel of the Incarnation, 1835 Northgate Drive, 75062, with a reception to follow in Gorman Faculty Lounge. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the University of Dallas Scholarship Fund.
