Harold Lee Arrington was born on Sept. 11, 1922, in Commerce, Texas, as the younger of two children to William and Mae. Harold graduated from Commerce High School in 1941 and was the senior class president. After graduating from high school, Harold joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1942, soon after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He served on a patrol frigate and a cargo ship, where he worked in the engine room as a machinist mate.
In the spring of 1945, while recovering from an operation in Boston, he met a U.S. Navy nurse named Barbara Came. They married on May 7, 1946, in Bar Harbor, Maine, Barbara’s hometown. They returned to Commerce and later settled in Dallas, where they raised their two children, Fred and Candy.
After working as a bus driver for the city of Dallas, Harold earned a Bachelor of Science in education in 1954 and a Master of Education in 1960 from East Texas State College.
Harold had a 30-year career with the Dallas Independent School District, where he served as a woodshop teacher and counselor at several schools. He retired in 1986.
He and his family enjoyed many summers at their lakeside cabin on Mount Desert Island in Maine. An avid woodworker, Harold would spend his days consumed in construction projects at the cabin. He was an active member of his community as a member of Oak Cliff Presbyterian Church, and volunteered with Meals on Wheels.
Harold was preceded in death by his beloved wife Barbara, his brother Bill, and his parents William and Mae.
He is survived by his son Fred Arrington (Sandy), daughter Candy Kappes (John), five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
