Born 5 July 1936 to Elza V. Powell and Essie M. Henley Powell in Gholson, Texas. Attended the local elementary school in Gholson and later enrolled in West High School in West, Texas. He professed his faith in Christ at an early age at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and later moved to Dallas where he became a member at New Birth Baptist Church. Garnet was a devoted choir member and active deacon. He is preceded in death by his mother, father, brothers Vernon and Terry. After high school graduation, he enrolled and attended Prairie View A&M University and later enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served his country and was honorably discharged. Garnet worked as a machinist at Texas Instruments for 30+ years and later retired and opened his own sporting goods store in Dallas to serve the community of Oak Cliff. He could often be found at the local chapter of the VFW. He would get up before dawn to go fishing and hunting. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He was married and to this union he leaves to mourn his children Garnet Powell, Jr. (Patricia) and Angela Powell, his sister Herbie Jean Yancey (Henry), grandchildren Piper, Karlie, Jillian, Gariston, Brad and a host of nieces and nephews. Kindness and generosity were some of Garnet’s best qualities and he oftentimes opened his home to his nieces and nephews and any others to help them.
