Evelyn Darlene Greene passed peacefully in her home on February 10, 2012. She was born on a farm in Walnut Grove, Minnesota, on August 3, 1923, the second of four children. She was pleased when the popular television series Little House on the Prairie made her hometown famous. As a child she liked horses and helped with the farm chores. She attended University of Minnesota-Mankato Business School and graduated with a two-year degree.
Through her roommate at school she met a young serviceman, Charles Greene, whom she later married. Chuck was stationed overseas and so the young couple started their new life together in Heidelberg, Germany. When Chuck left the service, they settled in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and raised their two children, Greg and Debra. In her free time, Evelyn enjoyed visiting relatives and playing cards with her friends, an activity she continued for decades, and the friendships from which she cherished all of her life.
Evelyn worked for most of her career as an office administrator at St. Cloud State University where she enjoyed interacting with students. Her skills were most utilized in the Physics Department where she excelled at the exacting tasks of typing strange equations and long formulas. Her attention to detail and capacity to burn up the keyboard, consistently typing 90 words a minute, also landed her the coveted role of typing the manuscripts for then St. Cloud Mayor Ed Henry’s book Metropolis in Transition.
After the children were grown and gone she divorced, retired, and became a world traveler. She visited Alaska, Scandinavia, the British Isles, Hong Kong, China, and India. Eventually she moved to Carrollton, Texas, to be closer to her brother and her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren. She was active in her church, St. Catherine’s, and involved in clubs such as The Keenagers, The Joy Club, and The Silver Capers.
In 2008 it was time to give up the responsibilities of living alone and Evelyn moved to Treemont Retirement Center in Dallas. She was closer to her family and well looked after by her care-givers. At the ripe old age of 88, Evelyn passed peacefully while napping in her favorite recliner on Friday, February 10, 2012.
She is survived by her daughter, Debra Greene (Maui, Hawaii), son, Greg Greene (Dallas), daughter-in-law Jane Greene (Dallas), and three grandchildren: Gregory, Landon, and Drake (Dallas). She is also survived by her brother, Dr. Robert Callewart (Dallas), and nephew, Dr. Craig Callewart (Dallas), great-nieces Katy and Lucy (Dallas) and a number of other nieces and nephews in Minnesota and elsewhere..
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, all memorials be sent to VNA Meals on Wheels, 1600 Viceroy Drive, Suite 400, Dallas, TX 75235.
