Jean grew up in Ruston. She attended Louisiana Tech University where she received her Bachelor's degree. She also received a Master’s degree in Reading from the University of Arkansas, Little Rock. Jean became an educator. After further studies at LA Tech and UALR she became a Certified Reading Specialist.
Jean met John Albert Oden in 1952 in New Orleans, LA while working for Delta Air Lines. They were married October 27, 1953 in Ruston, LA.
Jean and John were blessed with two daughters, Jamie Ramsey and Johnette Oden-Brunson, three grandchildren, Melody Ramsey, Andrew Ramsey and Hannah Oden-Brunson and a great-grandchild, Michiah Matt.
Over the years Jean worked for Delta Airlines and Life of Georgia Insurance Company. She taught elementary school (5th grade remedial reading) in Georgia, New Jersey, Florida, Arkansas and Texas. She retired after 32 rewarding years of teaching.
Her love of horses started at a very young age and stayed with her throughout her life. She was raised a Christian and was very active her entire life in her church "home". She was a member of a garden club in Georgia and loved flower arranging. Teaching and her wonderful Bible Study Fellowship family brought her great comfort and support.
She was preceded in death by her father, Elmer Grigsby, her mother, Pearl Grigsby, her brother, Samuel Grigsby, her sister, Francis Rhodes, her husband, John Oden and her daughter, Johnette Oden-Brunson.
She is survived by her daughter Jamie Ramsey, her 3 grandchildren and her great-grandson.
A Funeral Service will take place at 10:30 am on Monday, April 26th in the chapel at Sparkman-Crane Funeral Home, 10501 Garland Road, Dallas, TX 75218 with a viewing before the service from 10:00 to 10:30am.
A Light Reception will follow at 11:00 am. Safety units will then escort those who desire to attend the interment to Jean’s permanent resting place, the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Pkwy, Dallas, TX 75211 where the Interment Service will begin at 1 pm.
