Elizabeth Engel was born June 2, 1934 in Bakonysárkány (Bok-coin-shyr-kyene), Hungary (a very rural area of Hungary). Was working in a factory in Budapest in 1956 when the Russians invaded the city. She stood up with her countrymen to revolt against the Communist tyranny. Once the revolt was overpowered she was urged by her family to flee the country to have a better life. She escaped the country with her soon-to-be husband, Gustav Engel, who was also part of the uprising. They made their way to a refugee camp in Austria. They decided they wanted to move to Texas because they heard that there were good jobs there, and had read in books about Texas Cowboys, and wanted to see them in person. They arrived in America December 12, 1956 and were wed on January 12, 1957. They raised a family in Dallas, which included their daughter Anna and their son Tommy.
Elizabeth was always a supportive mother who worked to see that her children had more than what she had come from. Her constant goal was to instill in her children a spiritual life with God at the center. All of those that met and befriended her, always stated what a sweet and kind person she was.
She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, all from Hungary, and her loving husband of 42 years, Gustav Engel, who passed away December 15, 1999.
