Doris Freed passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 22, 2021, having recently celebrated her 90th birthday. Doris was a lifelong Dallas resident, born July 24, 1931, to Joseph and Ruth Barish. She graduated from Forest Avenue High School and attended SMU, prior to her marriage to her college sweetheart, Sol Freed, in 1950.
She is survived by her husband of over 71 years, her son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Cheryl Freed (San Antonio), and her grandsons, Tyler Freed (and fiancé Leslie Lugrin) and Russell Freed. She is also survived by her brother Marvin Barish and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and very special friends.
Doris was a remarkable force of nature. She was outspoken and a true advocate for what she believed in. Doris was always way ahead of her time and long utilized technology to connect with the world. Philanthropy and community building were important parts of her life. She was especially proud of her involvement with the American Cancer Society, as well as her synagogue and the greater Jewish community. She was a gracious and accomplished hostess, known for always welcoming friends and family into her home. Her incredible generosity and attention to detail made her guests feel truly special. She loved to play mah jongg with her friends, both in person and on the computer. She was beloved by friends of all ages and was a surrogate mother to so many. Doris was truly grateful for the experiences of her life and willingly shared the lessons learned with the people she loved.
Graveside services will be held at 1 pm, Friday, September 24, at Shearith Israel Memorial Park Cemetery, 4634 Dolphin Rd. In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Doris with a donation to the charity of your choice.
