Dennis was born in Ft. Worth, Texas, to James Midguel White & Alice Marie Coffman. He was the baby of five children. They lived in a home attached to the General Lumber Co., a lumber yard where his dad worked. When Dennis was 10, his dad was transferred to the Dallas lumber yard, and the family moved to Garland. Dennis joined the AG program at Garland High School and raised show cows. He won Junior Reserve Champion one year at the Texas State Fair.
After High School, Dennis worked at Intercontinental and Texas Instruments. He built houses and worked on a ranch before starting his career in building materials in 1981. He took over his father's job at General Lumber Co. so his father could retire. When General Lumber closed, Dennis went to work at Architectural Carpentry Materials, Inc., where he became manager. He retired from ACM in 2009, but continued to help take inventory every October.
Dennis had three sons ~ Dennis Wayne, Devin (Kim), and Derrick (Karen), whom he loved so much and was so proud of their accomplishments. He met Judy in 1982 and they married in 1984. In 2011, they bought their dream retirement place ~ 26 acres in East Texas, with a 1939 farmhouse on it. Dennis was remodeling the inside and preparing the acreage for cows. He spent most of his time at the farm while Judy continued to work in Dallas and visited on the weekends. He made fast friends of the neighbors, and enjoyed taking his coffee breaks with them or helping with their cattle. He loved sitting on the back porch, drinking coffee or sweet tea, and watching nature. He frequently called Judy or sent her pictures of trees and birds he identified.
Dennis had been successfully battling lung cancer for 7 years when he developed pneumonia, but his body just wasn't strong enough to fight this battle. Forever the optimist, he always had a joke or quick one-liner. Everyone he met loved his sense of humor, great hugs, and a contagious smile. We so dearly miss him. We will always remember his strong hands and heart, his gentle spirit and love of life.
