Dr. Simpson attended school in Temple and Kemper Military School. He did his undergraduate work at Southern Methodist University and the University of Texas at Austin, receiving his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School at Galveston.
He met his wife, Rebecca Jeanne Wellborn, while at SMU. They married June 18, 1949, and remained married for 66 years until she passed February 2, 2016. The year that he graduated from SMU, he was the youngest graduate and Jeanne's mother, who had gone back to school, was the oldest graduate in the class.
He interned at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut, spent two years in the Air Force in Manchester, New Hampshire and then completed six years of residency at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital New York, two as chief resident in New York City.
In 1962 he returned to Texas with his family. He joined the first neurosurgical group in Dallas, which became Nash, Patterson & Simpson. They went on to form Dallas Neurosurgical Association. He was one of the first 25 doctors on staff at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. There he became Chief of Neurosurgery, Chief of Surgery, Chief of Staff, and finally, President.
Dr. Simpson had a brilliant medical mind. When he took his national boards he scored number one in the country that year. He served as president of the Texas Association of Neurological Surgeons and was a member of the a Texas Medical Association. In addition to his medical practice and accomplishments, he served as president of Brook Hollow Golf Club, president of Rainbow Association in Athens, Texas, and president of Channels Ranch in Ennis, Montana.
His family remembers Grandaddy for many things. He loved cooking. He loved hunting, fishing and camping, and had been an excellent horseman. And then, of course, there was golf. He loved the mountains and the West, and shared that love with family and many friends. He loved his family - especially his wife, Jeanne - and they were devoted to each other. He left a great legacy and will be missed by a great many. His family would like to acknowledge the importance of the close ties to the McDowell family of Connecticut. The family would like to thank Delbert Vaughn, his wife Anita, nephew James, and sister-in-law Olga, for their love and support.
He is survived by his daughter, Laura McCarthy, her two children Aubrey and Bill McCarthy, and Evan and Sloan Simpson, the children of his late son, John, who passed on November 7, 2016. He is preceded in death by his sister, Elisabeth "Betty" Colgan, and is survived by Betty's children and grandchildren.
