Charlie was born on May 28, 1925, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. When he was 8 years old, he and his family moved to a farm, where they had no electricity or running water. He and his younger brother, Arthur, would start chores at 4:30 am, go to school and come home to finish their chores. Homework was done by candlelight.
Unable to enlist in the Navy fir WWII because of asthma, Charlie with his family helped the farming community for the war effort. Charlie and Arthur were members of FFA- Future Farmers of American And 4H - Head, Heart, Hands and Health. Their older brother, Tom, enlisted in the 10th Mapping Division in the Army Air Corp and served in the Pacific during WWII.
Charlie graduated as salutatorian from Union High School in Tulsa in a class of 13. He would have been valedictorian, but the principal lowered his grade after he and his buddies pulled a prank. He worked diligently for 18 years earning his B.S. in Business Management from the University of Tulsa while working full-time and raising a family. To obtain that degree, he also attended classes at TCU and SMU.
Charlie married Sara Hellewell (deceased 1999) in 1945, and they had three children, Ed Peet (married to Sarah Peet), Bill Peet (deceased 2001;married to Martha Peet) and Sherry Peet. Charlie and Sara had two granddaughters, Kristy Peet and Megan Graf (married to Travis Graf), and a great- grandson, Riley Graf and a great-granddaughter, Peyton Graf.
Charlie, an avid golfer played into his 90’s with a handicap of 4. He was an accomplished concert pianist. He also loved to draw and paint, often creating paintings inspired by Bob Ross. He was an avid reader- mysteries such as Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie were his favorites.
In 1975, Charlie became a member of Garland Toastmasters, where he was a Distinguished Toastmaster. Since 2004, he was a member of the Masons, Brooklyn Lodge #386, where he served as multiple officers including Worshipful Master. He was a member of the Scottish Rite and was awarded the Golden Trowel for outstanding service.
Charlie’s memorial service will be held at the Grove Hill Funeral Home and Memorial Park on Monday March 13, 2023 at 10am. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Scottish Rite Hospital for Children- an organization he dearly loved. Donations made at http://community.tsrhc.org/donate
A funeral service for Charles will be held Monday, March 13, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Grove Hill Funeral Home, 3920 Samuell Blvd, Dallas, TX 75228. Following the funeral service will be a committal service from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home, 7405 West Northwest Highway, Dallas, TX 75225.
