Betty LaTrelle Harrod Stokes was born on February 24, 1927 in Savannah, Georgia. She passed away at age 89 years, on Monday evening, December 12, 2016, in Dallas, Texas. Mrs. Stokes was a daughter of Nellie LaTrelle Syms and Walker Theodore Harrod, Sr., of Savannah, Georgia. She is survived by three children, Mrs. Belinda Stokes Fox (Gary) of Dallas, Texas, and sons Robert Joseph Stokes, Jr., and Abbot Christopher Stokes, both of Dallas, Texas; brother, Robert P. Harrod of New York City, and sister Carolyn Harrod Fabrikant of Pine Island, Bluffton, South Carolina, several nieces and nephews and four grandchildren; Lindsey Tommey Salloum, (Danny), Joseph Oliver Tommey of Dallas, Ashley Taylor Stokes of Augusta, Georgia, Sarah Margaret Stokes of Grand Junction, Colorado, and great granddaughter Holland Noor Salloum, of Dallas.
Betty Stokes was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Robert Joseph Stokes, Sr, her grandson Robert Joseph Stokes, III, of Dallas, and her brother, Walker T. Harrod, Jr. of Savannah.
Betty Stokes was a graduate of Newington, Georgia High School. She entered Nurses Training at St. Joseph's Hospital, Savannah in 1944 and earned her R.N. in 1947. She was a member of the U.S. Army Cadet Nurse Corps during WW II. In 1947, Betty married Robert Joseph Stokes of Port Wentworth, Savannah. "Bud" Stokes was General Manager of many Morrison's Cafeterias throughout the Southeast. In 1959 Bud Stokes leased and operated for several years, the famous Johnny Harris Restaurant and first Night Club in Savannah, Georgia. Johnny Harris Restaurant was founded by Betty's Uncle, John Newman Harris in April, 1924. Mrs. Stokes continued her nursing career for more than 50 years, 25 of those years associated with Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. In addition to her work in Healthcare, Mrs. Stokes also obtained a realtor's license in Dallas in 1965 and sold real estate from 1965-1969. Mrs. Stokes was a soft spoken, sophisticated lady with great southern charm. She was a devoted wife, mother and friend. She was a prolific reader who enjoyed her home, entertaining, and gardening.
A reception will follow a private graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Alzheimer’s Association
