Sherry Simmons was born to John and Roberta Simmons on December 10th, 1946 in Texas City, Texas and was blessed to share the same birthdate as her twin sister Marie who preceded her in death (2012). She was also preceded in death by her parents and brother Richard Simmons. She is survived by her brother John Simmons and his wife Karen from Arlington. Her nephew Doug Simmons and his wife Janaina and their daughter Melissa from Brazil as well as her niece Suzanne Sadler and her husband Brent and their two daughters Shannon and Bridget also from Arlington.
Sherry also lived in Corpus Christi and finally settled in Dallas where she and Marie graduated from W.W. Samuell High School. Sherry and Marie were always proud that they got to skip high school one day in November, 1963 to greet President John F. Kennedy and his wife Jackie at Dallas Love Field before the fateful motorcade to Dealey Plaza.
Sherry’s first job was as a long-distance telephone operator. Eventually she went on to become a Registered Nurse. Known for being a compassionate, dedicated, hard-working professional and she finally retired from Methodist Hospital in Dallas.
She loved travelling with family and friends all over Texas, the United States and internationally. Some of her favorite memories was family trips to Galveston for The 4th of July, family gatherings in Las Vegas, Alaskan cruise with her sister and trips with her mom to Hot Springs, Arkansas for some relaxation. She also loved the water and and took two Windjammer Barefoot Cruises and several trips with family and friends to the Bahamas on 55-foot Hatteras yacht.
Her big passion became following the Texas Rangers, sharing season tickets for many years and attending special team events like the mid-winter banquet. Opening Day, 4th of July fireworks and the final home game of the season. She also enjoyed Lone Star Park and was there for the opening and many trips to see the Kentucky Derby and The Belmont.
Family was always important to her and she shared many memories with them at Neil Diamond concerts, The Beatles, Willie Nelson and lots of sporting events like The Dallas Stars, Dallas Cowboys and she even enjoyed soccer games which led her to volunteer for The World Cup in 1994.
Sherry was a loving daughter, sister, aunt and cousin. During her later years Sherry’s health prevented travelling and other activities but she always anxiously looked forward to the start of Texas Rangers’ spring training and the regular season, never missing a Rangers game on television.
She will be sincerely missed but left us with many wonderful memories. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the SPCA.
