Alice Solis Pogue was born on April 7th, 1955, in Dallas, Texas as the first-born child of Andrew and Gloria Solis. She became blind at birth, and although this disability caused growing up more challenging, it allowed her to become vibrant and independent and made her insight keen. Even as a child, she had Rosa, her sister, by her side, helping her every step. Rosa learned braille to help Alice in her studies, being her teacher and protector throughout life.
Alice began her education at Ben Milam Elementary School in Dallas, dedicated to disabled students, until her parents moved her to the Texas School for the Blind in Austin to continue enriching her learning abilities. Her family would drive to Austin every weekend to visit her until high school graduation. As an adult, she began to work at Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind from 1975-1991 on the assembly line as a machine operator. Alice was responsible for meeting deadlines by fulfilling orders promptly. There she met the love of her life, Chester Pogue. If you knew Alice, you knew Chester! They were married in April 1979 and lived a beautiful, fulfilling life together for 23 years.
The day she lost Chester was the day her life was turned upside down. Until her final days, Alice never stopped speaking fondly about Chester to everyone she met as if he was still present. Upon his passing, Alice went back to live with her parents in Plano, TX and continued to work and study computer skills for her advancement. Alice had many friends from the Lighthouse for the Blind that enjoyed their social outings, dinners, lunches, and birthdays. In addition, she always looked forward to fellowship with friends from Trinity Church in Cedar Hill for their monthly Sunday brunches.
Alice went to rest on October 10th, 2022. At age 67, she lived the happy, independent life she always desired. While our hearts are breaking with anguish, we feel joyous that she can finally SEE loved ones, like Chester, her father, Andrew Solis, her Lord and Savior, and the majesty of heaven.
As a good friend reflected, "She was SO BRAVE and Independent; she inspired every person she met."
She is survived by her mother, Gloria Solis, sisters Rosa Ayala, husband Tim Humphrey, Patti Hernandez, husband Armando Hernandez, Brother Andy Solis Jr, and wife, Christina Solis. Nieces Andrea Ayala, Amy Castro, Raquel Solis, Nephews Michael Ayala, wife Ja'Ree Ayala, Andrew Solis III, wife Theresa Solis, and Samuel Solis.
The family invites you to her viewing & a chance to offer your words of comfort on Sunday, October 23rd, between 4-8 pm, at Calvary Hill Chapel.
