join her husband, father, mother and brother in a most heavenly place. Shirley was born
on October 3, 1932 to Sanford and Phyllis Barnes in Santa Monica. She was the
youngest of three children. During her life, she lived in Brentwood, Santa Monica and
West Los Angeles. Shirley attended Immaculate Heart High School and Immaculate
Heart College. Following college, Shirley met her future husband through mutual
friends. She and Donald R. Conaty, were engaged over Easter in 1956 and were
married on August 4, 1956 at St. Paul the Apostle church where they became life-long
members.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brother (Sanford “Sandy”
Hudson Barnes). She is survived by her sister Dian Roberts, her children Caren (Roger)
Kanne, Lisa Conaty, Colleen Hart, Christopher (Marissa) Conaty and Jennifer O’Shea;
her grandchildren Bryan Kanne, Patrick (Kari) Kanne, Ashley (Josh) Clark, Erin Laucis, Cory
Hart, Skyeler Hart, Carter Conaty and great grandchildren, twins Jackson and Dylan
Kanne.
Shirley was the ultimate stay-at-home Mom. She was a supreme hostess, cook, coach,
and chauffeur, who successfully balanced activities for all her children. Her joys were
her kids, cats, summers in Catalina, playing bridge, bowling league and tailgating at
USC football games. She was the family’s original “foodie”. Shirley and Donald
traveled the world together and experienced many wonderful and eventful journeys. She
was very active in charitable work with the Paulist Women’s Club at St. Paul, St. Anne’s Guild,
Junior League for Crippled Children and St. John of God.
