Wussy was born on December 23, 1922 in Culpeper, Virginia to Robert L. Gilmore, Sr. and Lillian Davis Gilmore. A four-letter athlete at Culpeper County High School, Wussy served in the U. S. Army in the South Pacific during WWII. He graduated with a business degree from Virginia Tech in 1950 and a true Hokie was born. Wussy was owner and operator of Gilmore’s Exxon for many years. He was a lifetime member of Culpeper United Methodist Church, was a little league coach, and an enthusiastic spectator of his children’s sporting events. An avid golfer for many years and baseball fan for his lifetime, Wussy gave advice and lessons to all who would listen. A warm smile and a good joke was his calling card.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jacquelyn Reynolds Gilmore and his five children, Elaine Gilmore Smiley and husband, Tom, of Richmond, Jean Gilmore Ascari and husband, Craig, of Richmond, Chuck Gilmore and wife, Julie, of Culpeper, David Gilmore of Culpeper, and Alan Gilmore and wife, Frankie, of Culpeper. His 10 grandchildren were by his side regaling him with jokes, playing his favorite music, and repeating stories of his adventures.
He is also survived by his sister, Marjorie Gilmore Fitzgerald of Culpeper. He was preceded in death by his brother, Atwell Eldridge Gilmore, of Woodville, Ohio and his sister, Doris Gilmore Stringfellow, of Bristol, Va. and his parents.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, Nov. 21, 2014 at 12:00p.m. at Culpeper United Methodist Church, with private interment at Culpeper National Cemetery with military honors provided by the V.F.W. Post 2524 Honor Guard.. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Culpeper Community Development Corporation, 602 South Main Street, Culpeper, Va. 22701.
