Rev. David P. Small Jr., 98, of Culpeper, VA died on June 26, 2021 at The Culpeper, a retirement community where he had lived for the past eight years. David was born on June 14, 1923 in Lancaster, SC, where he graduated from Lancaster High School. After high school he worked in the Navy Shipyard in Charleston, SC until he could enlist with the Army Engineers. During WWII he served in the South Pacific for three years. Following his military service, he received his B.A from Furman University. Pursuing his calling to the ministry, he studied at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, receiving the degrees of M.Div., Th.M and Doctorate of Ministry.
Following a two-year internship in Mobile, AL, he became pastor at Fair-Park Baptist Church in Alexandria, VA, where he served for 33 years. David continued his studies, attending a session for American Clergy at Mansfield College in Oxford, England. He served on many civic and ecumenical endeavors, and was particularly honored to serve as Chaplain for the day in the U.S. House of Representatives.
David Small retired in 1988 and built a home in Fredericksburg, VA where, he and wife, Mary, lived for 23 years. In retirement, he served as interim pastor at several churches in VA, as well as English-speaking International churches in Holland, Germany and Bulgaria. David enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family, including his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
David was preceded in death by his two oldest sons, Dave Small and Steve Small, and is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Mary C. Small. He is also survived by son Danny Small and wife, Susie; his daughter Kristin Wright, and husband John; and daughter in law, Robin Small. He is survived by granddaughters Cara Small, Lauren Stover (Matt), Michelle Hull (Ryan); grandson, Mark Small (Rachael); and eight great-grandchildren - Hudson Read, Bennett Read, Mia Stover, Wyatt Stover, Kari Hull, Paige Hull, Blake Small and Summer Small.
Services will be held at 2:00 pm on July 8, 2021 at the Culpeper Baptist Church, 318 S. West St., Culpeper, VA 22701. Burial will be private.
