Barbara Carpenter Heltzel, 84, peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior surrounded by her family on November 18, 2019 at The Culpeper senior living community. She was a faithful member of Culpeper Baptist Church serving in many capacities, including as a Sunday School teacher and as a member of the Flower Committee.
Barbara was a lifelong resident of Culpeper, Virginia, having graduated from Culpeper County High School and attended Madison College and Mars Hill College. She was a devoted homemaker and loved caring and providing for her family. She also worked for the Virginia Department of Highways, and as an administrative assistant for Culpeper Memorial Hospital. Upon retirement, she opened an antique shop named the Mustard Seed in Madison, Virginia. Barbara was a talented pianist and organist, having played for many local churches and other venues and events. Her greatest joy in life was her family and she always treasured time spent with family and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband of 37 years, Roy Franklin Heltzel, and her parents John Kenneth and Margaret Fletcher Carpenter. She is survived by her son, Roy Franklin Heltzel Jr. and wife Ann Jessee Heltzel of Chesapeake, Virginia, and her daughter, Paige Heltzel Haynes of Manassas, Virginia. She is also survived by her four grandchildren Roy Franklin Heltzel III, Katherine Ann Heltzel, Ryan Perry Haynes, and Joseph Tyler Haynes. Surviving family includes her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Earl and Ellen Heltzel, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and close life-long friends. The family would like to recognize and thank all of the wonderful people at The Culpeper and Piedmont Hospice for the loving care they showed Barbara.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2019 at 1:00 pm at Clore-English Funeral Home, 11190 James Madison Highway, Culpeper, Virginia. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Culpeper Baptist Church at 318 S West St Culpeper, Virginia, 22701.
