He was a lifelong fan of the Chicago White Sox and Ohio State Buckeyes and found great joy in cheering on his favorite teams. Joe also enjoyed spending his free time bowling, playing pool, and traveling.
Joe worked at Inland Steel for many years, where he was affectionately known as "Bud," a nickname he gave to everyone he met. His warm and friendly personality made him a beloved member of the Inland Steel family.
He is survived by his brothers, John and Phillip Ortiz; his eldest son, Jeffrey Ortiz and his wife, Myrna Ortiz; and his cherished grandchildren, Tegan Ortiz, Jeramy Ortiz and his wife, Carolina Ortiz. Joe also leaves behind his great-grandchildren, Sophia, Liam, Emilio, Violet, Waverley, and Felicity; as well as his significant other, Margarita Cuellar; her daughter, Ivy; and his loyal companion, Pudgie, whom he lovingly called his "little bud."
Joe was preceded in death by his mother, Frances; father, Ted Ortiz; youngest son, Joey Ortiz; and brothers, Albert and Richard.
Joe will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. His legacy of kindness, humor, and love for life will continue to live on in the hearts of those he touched.
A Visitation for Joseph will take place on Monday, September 30, 2024, from 11:00 AM until the Funeral Service at 1:00 PM at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 8178 Cline Avenue, Crown Point, IN 46307. Burial will follow at 2:00 PM at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
