George was the loving husband for 53 years to the late Marina Stavropoulos; beloved father Anna (Tolis) Hovardas, Fay (Mitchell) Black, and Harye (Angela) Stavropoulos; proud grandfather to George (Carrie) Olson, Patricia Olson, Sotiri (Demitra) Hovardas, and George Harye Stavropoulos; great-grandfather to Zoey Olson; cherished son to the late Theoharis and the late Anatoli Stavropoulos; loving brother to Simo (Anna) Stavropoulos, and the late Hercules, Paraskevi and Eugenia; uncle and godfather to many nieces and nephews.
George came to the United States, landing on Ellis Island at age 17, with 25 cents in his pocket and a bag of clothes in search of a better life. He met the love of his life and they were married January 27, 1963 in East Chicago. George and Marina lived and raised their family in The Harbor of East Chicago. He retired after 34 years of faithful service at Inland Steel. After retirement, he worked for Beta Steel for several years. George was a faithful member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church of Schererville, IN. He was a member of Pavlos Melas and AHEPA Chapter 157, where he enjoyed working the BINGO nights. George was an avid gardener and was very proud of a variety of vegetables. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and his great-granddaughter.
Visitation will be Wednesday, July 19, 2023 from 9:00 AM until the time of his Funeral Service at 10:00 am at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 528 West 77th Street, Schererville, IN 46375. He will be laid to rest next to his loving wife at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
