John V. Schartner of Garrison NY, lost his gallant fight against cancer on April 21, 2011. Born April 4, 1953 in Bronx, NY to Albert V. and Beverly A. (Walsh) Schartner of Fall River, MA. He is survived by his beloved wife Carla Gambino Schartner, his devoted daughter Kaylee Schartner, his loving parents and siblings, Peter Schartner, Fishkill, NY, Graceann Schartner (Bill Contreras) East Greenwich, RI, Matthew Schartner, Tamworth, NH. Also 15 nieces and nephews and nine grand nieces and nephews.
He graduated from Ossining High School in 1971.
John, a retired member of the Army Reserves/National Guard served honorably for 22 years. He had great skill working with his hands as a trade carpenter. Secondarily working with his wife in their antique business in Cold Spring, NY. John had many years with Teamster Local Unions 445/456.
All that knew John recognized he was a special human being. Strong, hard working, the first to help out friend or stranger. A selfless, kind and patient soul. He loved the outdoors and respected all forms of life. Above all he adored his daughter and couldn't have been more proud. Thankful for his sister Graceann, a nurse, who was by his side the last weeks of his life. His wife is grateful to have had this wonderful man and knows there is no greater gift in life.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the EDWARD F. CARTER FUNERAL HOME, 41 Grand St., Croton-on-Hudson, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 28 at Holy Name of Mary Church in Croton.
