It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Bourgeois, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and professional, who left this world on August 29, 2024, at the age of 72. James was a man of remarkable dedication, both to his career and, more importantly, to his beloved family. His life was a testament to the virtues of hard work, integrity, and love.
Born on March 7, 1952, to Armond and Jane Bourgeois. James grew up in Lafayette, Louisiana, where he developed a strong work ethic early on. This foundation would carry him through a successful 50+ years in the dredging industry, with 30+ years being a Dredge Captain with Pine Bluff Sand and Gravel Company, where he was known not only for his expertise but also for his unwavering commitment to excellence. Most recently he was awarded the 2023 Safety Leadership Award from The Council for Dredging and Marine Construction Safety in Washington DC. His colleagues admired him for his wisdom, diligence, and the way he mentored those around him, always eager to help others succeed.
But as proud as James was of his professional achievements, it was his role as a family man that truly defined him. He married the love of his life, Judy Chase Ory, his wife of 42 years, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. As a father, James was the bedrock of his family, always there with a kind word, a listening ear, and boundless support. His children, Jeremy and Jill, along with his grandchildren, Chase and Tyler, were the light of his life, and he took immense pride in their accomplishments, always guiding them with gentle wisdom and unconditional love. Family was his greatest joy.
James was a man who was loved by many – family, friends, and coworkers. He always had a smile and kind words for anyone who needed it. In his free time, James enjoyed his involvement in the Mardi Gras Krewe of Thoth and watching LSU. He also loved cooking and those who were close to “Bourge” most certainly savored his special fried catfish or delicious gumbo on many occasions.
James leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire those who knew him. His love, strength, and kindness will remain in the hearts of his family and friends forever. He is survived by his loving wife Judy Bourgeois; children Jeremy Ory (Erica) and Jill Bourgeois; grandchildren Chase and Tyler Ory; brothers Dale Bourgeois (Pansy) and Donald Bourgeois (Gwen); sister Christine Prejean, cherished godchildren Jamie Bourgeois, Jamie Chase Russell, and Colby Brooks, and many loving nieces and nephews. He will also be deeply missed by other family and friends – the Chase family, the Goelz family, the Ory family, the Rideau family, the Moore family and all of his extended “Jackson family.”
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Farhad Aduli, MD, FACC, Jeffrey Kitch, NP and the staff of Louisiana Heart and Vascular Institute, for their care and compassion through the years.
A celebration of James’ life will be held on September 6, 2024 at Grace Funeral Home, 450 Holy Trinity Drive, Covington, Louisiana. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, followed by Mass of Christian Burial, officiated by Fr. Rodney Bourg, at 12:00 Noon. Interment will follow in St. Lazarus of Bethany Memorial Garden under the care and direction of Grace Funeral Home.
