His battle with dementia was heartbreaking for family and friends to bear witness to, may he now be at peace. Our family would like to thank the staff of Glacier View Lodge for taking time to get to know Gerry and provide the care he needed. A heartfelt thank you to Darren of Seniors Wheels & Care for bringing joy to Gerry’s weekly routine.
Gerry was born November 6th, 1947 in Preeceville Saskatchewan to Glen & Jean Sando. He is survived by his younger siblings, Greg Sando (Candace), Lynda Sando (Pat), Tammy Eveleigh (Keith) and Paul Sando (Pam) and his nieces & nephews along with their wonderful growing families. Though Gerry moved west, Saskatchewan always held a special place in his heart.
Gerry leaves behind his loving children Mark Schaafsma (Tina), Simone Sando (Charles) and Dominique Sando, as well as his grandchildren Deanna, Josiah, Caleb and Linnaea and great grandchild Hartley. Married to the love of his life, Barbara Murphy in 1977, the couple found their forever home overlooking the ocean in Union Bay B.C. in 1981. A labour of love, their character home and the garage “pool hall” became the hub for many gatherings. Gerry’s ultimate happy place was being surrounded by friends, good food and music.
A strong work ethic helped Gerry explore many jobs along the way. Ultimately he pursued his teaching degree at UVic, graduating with honours. His teaching career started in Gold River B.C., where he and wife Barbara made lifelong connections. He spent time teaching at Union Bay Elementary, GP Vanier Annex and Royston Elementary. His most memorable times were the collaborations with staff and students that produced school plays, Japanese tea ceremonies and educational field trips.
Gerry often wished his energy could keep up with all that he hoped to enjoy and accomplish. He was passionately involved in the Union Bay community - he helped start a Chamber of Commerce, worked for the beautification of the highway boulevard and joined the theatrics of the Historical Society. He loved coaching his daughter’s softball teams, playing golf & pool with friends, gardening and taking the family to Tree Island.
Experiencing live music was a passion. His musical upbringing and extrovert nature often landed him in backstage adventures and he loved to retell the tales. He was forever compiling the next best mixed tape/CD to share with anyone willing to indulge him. Gerry's appreciation of music and dance was passed on to his children. Gratefully, he had time to share musical moments with granddaughter Linnaea that created a lasting connection.
Through his ups and downs Gerry always held compassion for others. He would twirl you into a dance to lift your spirits, invite you over for a meal or impart some wisdom that you needed to hear. He was uniquely him and his presence will be forever missed.
A celebration of life will be held in the late spring of 2025 - there will be music & dancing.
